Understanding NHS Pay Bands and Progression

NHS pay bands are structured to reflect the level of responsibility, skills, and experience required for different roles within the health service. Each band contains multiple pay steps, which typically increase annually based on your length of service in that band.

How Pay Progression Works

Most NHS staff progress through pay steps automatically each year until they reach the top of their band. Pay step progression usually occurs on your anniversary date, provided you've completed the required service and met performance expectations.

Important Notes

The salaries shown are based on the 2026-27 pay scales and represent gross annual salaries before tax and other deductions. Actual take-home pay will vary depending on your tax code, pension contributions, and other factors. Some roles may also be eligible for additional payments such as high-cost area supplements, unsocial hours payments, or specialist allowances.

For the most accurate and up-to-date information about your specific salary and entitlements, please consult your HR department or refer to the official NHS pay circulars.
